Looking for an AJA FS8 in Dubai, the UAE or the wider Middle East? Mediasys has been an AJA distributor in the Middle East for more than 20 years. We can help you plan, quote and deploy AJA's newest frame sync and SDI/IP gateway.
Broadcasters, production houses, OB truck operators, houses of worship, stadiums and proAV integrators across the Middle East are all facing the same challenge. They run SDI today, they are moving to IP, and they have to keep both worlds working together. The AJA FS8 is built for exactly that.
What Is the AJA FS8?
The AJA FS8 is a 1RU hybrid SDI/IP media processor. AJA describes it as a video and audio processor that bridges SDI and IP infrastructures in broadcast, production and proAV. It builds on the AJA FS frame sync line and is the first AJA frame sync to support SMPTE ST 2110.
In one rack unit, the FS8 combines:
- Frame synchronization
- Up, down and cross-conversion
- Frame rate conversion
- HDR and SDR color management
- Audio processing and routing
- Delay management
- An SDI-to-IP and IP-to-SDI gateway
AJA FS8 Key Features
Up to 8 HD or 4 UltraHD Processing Channels
The FS8 powers up to eight channels of HD or four channels of UltraHD image processing. You can mix and match UltraHD and HD modes to suit each job.
12G-SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 Connectivity
According to AJA, the FS8 supports up to 16x 12G-SDI inputs. It also supports 8x HD or 4x UHD ST 2110-20 inputs, with ST 2022-7 redundancy. Fiber and HD-BNC connectivity are available through optional SFP modules. The FS8 specification sheet also lists NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 support, which makes it easier to fit into IP-based facilities.
Dante, MADI and a 459 x 448 Mono Audio Matrix
Audio is a major strength. The FS8 supports embedded SDI audio, ST 2110-30, Dante and MADI. Together these create a 459 x 448 mono audio matrix. You can route, convert, adjust levels, delay and sample-rate convert without adding separate audio hardware. Four audio down-mixers also convert 5.1 or 7.1 surround to stereo.
HDR and SDR Color Management
Each video processor can use integrated NBCU LUTs, user 3D LUTs or dynamic LUT modes. Optional Colorfront and BBC HLG LUT licenses are also available. The FS8 uses 33-point 3D LUT processors with tetrahedral interpolation, which helps you deliver consistent pictures from mixed HDR and SDR sources.
Delay and Ultra-Low Latency
For live work, the FS8 offers configurable delay of up to 60 frames in HD, 30 frames in UltraHD and 2.5 seconds of audio. Its ultra-low latency mode adds less than half a video frame of latency, which suits demanding live applications.
A Modern Node-Based Web Interface
You set up and control the FS8 from a browser. The web UI shows an interactive node-based processing pipeline, video preview, audio meters, presets and status monitoring. A front-panel color LCD with moving video and audio meters adds confidence monitoring at the rack.
Open Control Through a RESTful API
The FS8 includes a publicly available RESTful API described by OpenAPI. You can build custom control interfaces with it. AJA also notes third-party integrations in development from Cyanview, Pomfort and Skaarhoj.
Why the FS8 Matters for Middle East Broadcast and proAV
Broadcast and live production in the region are growing quickly. Broadcast centers, sports venues, event productions and corporate AV installations are all investing in infrastructure that has to last. The FS8 suits this market for four reasons.
- It bridges SDI and IP. You can keep your 12G-SDI equipment and still add ST 2110 sources and destinations when you are ready.
- It solves mixed-source problems. Mismatched frame rates, rasters and color spaces are common in multi-camera and multi-vendor productions. The FS8 handles them in one device.
- It saves space. Fewer boxes means a lighter, lower-power rack. That helps OB vehicles, fly-away systems and compact facilities.
- It is built for the long term. AJA backs its products with a five-year warranty and technical support, with no contracts, recurring software maintenance fees or feature subscriptions required for core functionality.
Who Should Consider the AJA FS8?
AJA FS8 Price and Availability
AJA announced a US MSRP of $14,995 for the FS8, with optional Colorfront Engine and BBC HLG LUT licenses at $1,995 and $295. The 4x SFP28 cages need SFP modules, which are not included with the unit.
The AJA FS8 combines multi-channel frame sync, conversion, HDR/SDR color management, audio processing and an SDI-to-IP gateway in a single rack unit.
